General Introduction to Liaoning University
¡¡¡¡In the course of over half a century's development, Liaoning University has grown into a multiple-discipline comprehensive university, embracing Chinese language and literature, history, philosophy, economics, law, foreign languages, art, natural science, engineering and management. One of its predecessors is Shenyang Commercial College set up by the People's Government of the Northeast in November, 1948. The September of 1958 saw the amalgamation of the Northeast Institute of Finance and Economics, Shenyang Normal College and Shenyang Institute of Russian, which led to the birth of Liaoning University. Marshal Zhu De wrote an inscription of the school name for the University. At present, the University has an area of 2,138 mu, i.e. 1,420,000 square meters (including the University proper, Liaoyang Foreign Languages College and the Xinchengzi Campus), with a building area totaling 600, 000 square meters.
¡¡¡¡Liaoning University is one of the key universities listed in the nation's "Project 211" and affirmed by the Ministry of Education. The University has fifteen colleges, namely: College of Economics, College of Business Administration, College of International Economics, Asia-Australia College of Business, College of Cultural Propagation, College of Philosophy and Public Administration, College of Foreign Languages, College of Radio, Film and Television, College of Chemical Science and Engineering, College of Law, College of Information Science and Technology, College of Higher Professional Techniques, College of Adult Education, College of Foreign Students, and College of Training Self-Study Students of Humanities and Professional Techniques. In addition to the colleges, the University has five college-level faculties, namely: Faculty of History, Faculty of Mathematics, Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Life Science and Faculty of Environment Science. Altogether, the University has forty-three undergraduate disciplines, fifty-three master-degree-granting disciplines, including MBA and JM. The University is also invested with authority to grant doctorate of philosophy in theoretical economics (the first level discipline) and nine other doctorates (the second level discipline). Furthermore, the University has three mobile stations for post-doctoral studies to its credit, with two national key disciplines of world economy and national economy in addition to a base for cultivating personnel of basic national economy, and a key base for research on humanities, and a center of research on the system of comparative economy as designated by the Ministry of Education. The University has eleven province-level key disciplines and one test and detection center.
¡¡¡¡ At present, Liaoning University has a teaching body of 1,116 full-time faculty members, among whom there are six hundred and fourteen professors and associate professors. The University has 18,700 students of different kinds, ranging from undergraduates and graduate students to foreign students. Since it was founded, Liaoning University has established formal friendly relationships of academic cooperation and interflow with over forty higher schools and research institutions in fourteen countries, and has since fostered over a hundred thousand full-time students for the country and over 5,000 foreign students as well from forty-two countries including the United States, Japan, Russia, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, the Republic of Korea and Thailand.
¡¡¡¡ The construction of the public service system on the campus has begun to take shape. The University's library with its 18,500 square meter building area, equipped with modern advanced facilities, is stocked with over 1.6 million volumes, including over 300 kinds of rare and treasured books, which are affirmed by the United Nation as the exclusive possessions of the University's library. The University also has a history museum and a museum of natural history. They have a collection of over two thousand pieces of art treasures and eleven thousand pieces of biological specimens respectively.
¡¡¡¡ Confronted with opportunities and challenges of the new century, Liaoning University is accelerating its reform, innovation and development. Now with the strengthening of disciplines as its propelling force, teaching and research as its dominant attention, the building up of teaching and managing staff as its foundation, the improvement of campus environment as its supporting condition, reform as its motive power, the intensification of administration work as its means of achieving its goal, and last but not least, strengthening Party-building and ideological and political work as its bulwark, the University will double its effort to build itself into a teaching-and-research type university at a fairly high academic level and with certain international influence in five to ten years.
Introduction to the College of International Students

The College of International
Students was established in 1965. It is a separate entity dealing
exclusively with nternational students. Every year students from
over 20 countries come to attend Chinese classes and carry out
research in Chinese culture.
¡¡¡¡With years
of development, the college has accumulated extensive experience in
curriculum and administration and has formed a flexible model of
running a school with multiple administrative levels. Its faculty is
very experienced, well qualified and has a rich teaching experience.
¡¡¡¡In 2003, the University allocated funds to construct a modern building of more than 15,000 square meters for the college, which has facilities such as multi-media classrooms (audio-visual, computer) to meet international students?needs and keep abreast of developments in teaching methodology. Due to our reputation, we have the greatest number of international students in Liaoning Province and in all the northeast of China.
¡¡¡¡The Committee of Chinese Proficiency Test authorized Liaoning University to organize three elementary and intermediate and one advanced tests of HSK every year.

Type of Students
1.Chinese language student
Applicants for Chinese study should be between the ages of 18 and 65. Once admitted, they will study Chinese language in the College of International Students, Liaoning University.
2.General scholar
Applicants for advanced study should have academic credentials of university study for more than two years. Those who want to engage in advanced studies in their original major or a related major in China should be below 45 in age. The students can attend courses together with undergraduate students. The study period is about one or two years.
3.Undergraduate
Applicants for undergraduate study should have academic credentials that equate with Chinese senior high school. They should be under 35 and will take academic courses for undergraduates if they could pass the entrance examination. The study period is about 4 years.
4.Master¡¯s candidate
Applicants for a master¡¯s degree should have academic credentials that equated with a bachelor¡¯s degree in China. They should be under 40 and provide an academic credentials paper and at least two recommendation letters issued by associate professors or above. The applicants who pass the entrance examination can be candidates for a master¡¯s degree. The study period is 3 years.
5.Doctorate candidate
Applicants for a doctorate degree should have academic credentials that equate with a master¡¯s degree in China. They should be under 45 and provide an academic credentials paper and at least two recommendation letters issued by associate professors or above. The applicants who pass the entrance examination can be candidates for a doctorate degree. The study period is 3 years.

2£®Undergraduate

Registration
Matriculates should register before the date required in the Admission Notice. Anyone who is unable to register on time should get permission from the university. Otherwise, the student will be regarded as terminating the program.

- Liaoning University helps students apply for their residence permit.
1. ¡°Physical Examination Record for Foreigners¡± must be obtained from a local Chinese Embassy or Consulate, or Shenyang Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau. Only the official Record is effective. It should be turned into the Admission Office after students have the examination.
2. Students from other universities in China should alter the residence permit in the local Administration Division of Entry-Exit before he transfers to Liaoning University. After registration, the University will apply or extend the permit according to different conditions.
3. International Students should apply for their residence permit on time after he or she enters China. Otherwise, there will be a fine incurred.

Majors in the College of International Students
Chinese Training
1.
Chinese language classes are divided into three administrative levels in accordance with students¡¯ proficiency of Chinese, namely: Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced Classes. After completing the course, students qualify for a certificate in Chinese proficiency.
2. Short-term Class
Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced Classes are offered over summer and winter vacation. Each class is set up with as few students as possible for the purpose of accelerating the students¡¯ Chinese studies within a short term
• Degree Courses
1. The four-year undergraduate course is divided into bilingual study of Chinese and English and business Chinese. Students who successfully pass the exam and complete the thesis will be granted a Certificate of Undergraduate and Bachelor¡¯s Degree.
2. Teaching Chinese as a Second Language The four-year undergraduate course is currently a special program for Chinese students. It is divided into bilingual study of Chinese and English and secretaire Chinese. The students who successfully pass the exam and complete the thesis will be granted a Certificate of Undergraduate and Bachelor¡¯s Degree.
3. Chinese Linguistics and Graphemes The three-year postgraduate course starts in 2004. International students will study together with Chinese postgraduates.
